What is a
Ranch?
A ranch is the unique
relationship between man and nature working
together
in a sustainable manner.
The ranch is a place where generational
knowledge is passed on by mentorship, each
generation taking their turn as both student and
teacher.
We live and work with each other in a
beautiful yet difficult environment.
This environment builds and molds our
integrity, work ethic and our character.
The ranch demands dedication and attention
daily to both land and animal.
With the advent of factory farm food
production people have lost the ability to provide
their families with a healthy diet.

Location:
We are located west of Theodore, Saskatchewan in an area
known as the Beaver Hills.
The land that we run our cattle on is a pristine
parkland landscape with many wildlife species.
We raise Speckle Park cattle with the natural
resources we have available to produce top quality meat
products for the consumer.
The wildlife are our gauge to see if we are doing
things right.
The call of a bull elk in the crisp fall air, the scream of
a red–tailed hawk in July, the howl of the coyote, the cow
and calf moose browsing the wetlands or even the rare sight
of a bear or cougar at dusk is evidence of our commitment to
land stewardship.
“We do not inherit
the land, We borrow it from our children”

|
Our Cattle:
Our family runs a herd of 150 Speckle Park and Angus cows.
The Speckle Park is a uniquely Saskatchewan breed of cattle
and has the combined genetics of some of the oldest breeds
known; White Park cattle, Teeswater Shorthorn and of course
the popular Aberdeen Angus.
Speckle Park cattle have been selected to provide the
best-flavored and most tender meat worldwide.
The Speckle Park is a rare breed of cattle that has
been used mostly to expand breeding stock to this point.
Instead of seeing it only on our kitchen tables, we
will now be able to provide this quality meat to our
customers.

Our Goal:
Our goal is to be able to sustain ourselves by controlling the
treatment of our animals from birth to the consumer’s plate.
We want to make our living from working with the land using
beef animals to convert the energy captured by the plants and
convert it to a healthy source of protein.
We wish to be successful in this endeavor while passing our
values and beliefs to our children, so this knowledge can be
learned. Sustainability
is dependant on our and their ability to make a living raising food.

Natural Diet
Legacy Speckle Park Beef cattle are fed a 100% vegetarian diet.
No growth hormones or feed additives other than the
natural ingredients of the forages and grain.
The first 14-18 months of the animal’s life is spent on
native ranges, seeded pastures and hay.
As a calf they eat grass and in winter they are fed a
grain supplement to assist in winter survival.
Towards spring they are on pastures until fall and
winter. The last
3-5 months they are on a diet of grain and hay.
This slower growth period allows the meat to become well
flavored and tender.

Meat
Quality and Trace ability:
Our meat is both inspected and
graded by provincial inspectors at West Bridgeford Meats of Tugaske, SK.
We have a tracking code and each animal can be traced from the
meat packages you receive to our ranch and through our records here.
Each meat package will have the animal’s individual tracking
number on it, this will give the consumer the confidence of knowing
exactly what they are purchasing.
The ability to trace the history of these animals allows us to be
accountable and transparent and gives the customer reassurance as to
where their beef comes from.
They are on a grain-based ration for minimal time, which retains
the beneficial fatty acids from the forages.
These are the Omega 3’s and CLA’s (Conjugated Linoleic Acids).
|
Technology and
Beef Genetics:
We use ultrasound
technology to determine the best meat carcass genetics, and use
these in our breeding programs.
The Speckle Park has been selected for carcass value
since the 1950’s and has recently gone on to win numerous meat
competitions at the Calgary Stampede.
The ultrasound aids in the selection of animals that will
have all the characteristics to produce top quality beef.
